Best Baby Sleep Products To Get Baby To Sleep
Safe Space For Them To Sleep
When you are looking to create the perfect sleeping environment for your baby, you need to consider where your baby will sleep. Your baby may prefer to sleep with you via bed-sharing, using a bassinet in the same room as you. Some babies prefer to sleep in their own nursery in the crib. There are many options to choose from when it comes to choosing a safe space for your sleepy baby.
If you want to bedshare, there are products that make this a viable and safe option for you. When bed-sharing you can use products such as cosleepers like this one that attach to your bed which allows you to keep the same amount of sleeping space from before you baby was born.
If you don’t enjoy the idea of having a cosleeper anchored to the bed, you can try a sleeper like this one which allows the baby to sleep in your bed with you, safely.
You can even opt for a more cozy sleeper and go with a baby lounger or a baby nest which is a softer, more pillow-like option for a baby co-sleeper.
You can also consider having the baby in a bassinet in your bedroom, which is a very popular option for parents of newborns. Our favourite bassinet is the Graco Dream Suite Bassinet as it is space-saving, money-saving and has a change table option for the ultimate convenience factor.
You cam also use a travel crib like this one instead of a bassinet in your bedroom to keep the baby close by while they sleep.
Some babies like to sleep in their own room, or the nursery. This is a safe option and allows the baby to sleep in their own crib. This is a great option for parents who are sensitive to noise in the night and cannot sleep when the baby grunts and squeaks while they sleep.
Whatever sleep product you end up choosing for your little one, making sure it meets sleep safety standards is the most important aspect of all.
Tranquilo Mat – This is a life-changing mat that you can place within the baby crib and it keeps the baby calm with vibrations and soft sounds. This is a great way to calm a fussy baby and even helps gassy babies relieve their gas! There are 3 vibration levels and 2 modes with heartbeat sounds to choose from and the whole thing is cordless which makes it very safe. There is a removable and washable cover and the whole thing can be folded small so you can take it with you on the road.
https://amzn.to/3pdEHMaHALO SnoozyPod – For the baby that is transitioning from the crib to a big kid bed or from the bassinet into the crib, the Snoozypod is a great device to help your little one with the adjustment. Slip the snoozypod underneath the mattress and this vibrating bedtime soother will help your little one calm down. This matt has vibrations, soothing sounds and a glow as well. The whole thing is Bluetooth compatible and you can control it with your smartphone so you can soothe your baby without actually having to enter their room and risking waking them up further. The snoozypod is a nice compact size too so you can bring it with you to grandmas house if need be.
And for those who often fall off their regular sleep patterns while traveling (whether it’s in a hotel room or at Grandma’s), the SnoozyPod’s compact size makes it a great travel companion that can duplicate their soothing sleep conditions in any foreign space.
Why swaddle the baby?
Swaddles help babies calm down by helping them keep their startle reflex under control while the sleep and helps keep the hands off the face to prevent scratching. Often times swaddled babies sleep for longer priods of time than babies who are not swaddled.
It may seem like a lot of work to swaddle your baby each time they need to sleep, but the benefits of swaddling make that extra work worth it.
Swaddling is awesome for babies who are going to sleep in their own bassinet, crib or playpen and it helps keep them on their backs which is the best sleep position for babies.
The good news is, you don’t have to be an expert swaddler these days. There are many products available that make the whole process much easier with zippers and velcro.
Here are the best swaddle blankets on the market today that help babies and parents get a better nights sleep:
Swaddle Me – The swaddle me blankets are an affordable velcro fastened blanket that helps parents easily swaddle their baby. Parents can use this swaddle from 7-14 lbs or until baby reaches 26 inches in length.
We especially love that this swaddle has a hook and loop attachment style to create the perfect fit for your growing newborn.
Little Lotus – These fancy swaddle blankets are a little more costly than the swaddle me brand but for good reason. We like this swaddle option because it is made from a temperature controlling fabric, the same kind that is used in NASA spacesuits to ensure the baby doesn’t get overheated or chilly.
There is a special zipper at the bottom of the swaddle to make nighttime diaper changes easy peasy and you can change the diaper without unswaddling the baby completely.
The swaddle wings ensure the baby is snuggly swaddled in and are easy to adjust. The bummer is, you can’t easily find them on Amazon, though sometimes you can get lucky! You can purchase these swaddled right on the little lotus website, click here to visit.
Love To Dream Swaddle UP – This swaddle is perfect for babies who break out of their swaddles easily. The Love To Dream Swaddle Up has a unique design where it positions your baby’s arms in the “wings” by the shoulders which allows for the same self-soothing effect that they were able to create in the womb.
The dual zipper makes for easy peasy diaper changes and there is no wrapping or velcro involved.
Halo Sleep Sack – The HALO sleep sack is another favorite swaddle of ours. Not only does it keep the hands from waving around, but it doubles as a sleep sack or a wearable blanket.
These sacks are adjustable to suit your baby’s specific sleep style. You can swaddle hands down, up, hands to the face or have the hands out and unswaddled. This is very helpful because each baby is different, and has different preferences on how they like to sleep.
The bottom has a double zipper design which allows for easy diaper changes so you can keep your little one swaddled up perfectly while they get a clean bum in the middle of the night.
Aden + Anais Swaddle Blanket – We love these muslin swaddle blankets that have no velcro or zippers. They are a simple blanket but are a good size and a nice texture that allows for easy swaddling. We absolutely love how durable and versatile these blankets are. Once your baby no longer requires swaddling, you’ll still be using these blankets for going out, catching spit ups, and more.
These soft blankets are easy to care for as you can simply throw them in the washing machine with all your other baby clothing.
Along with the swaddles with the velcro and the zipper, these swaddle blankets are a must-have item, so throw them on your baby registry ASAP.
To create a peaceful and enjoyable sleeping environment for your baby, it’s important to add white noise to their sleeping environment.
In the womb, it is very noisy. The baby can hear your lungs working as you were breathing in and out, your blood rushing through your body and any food and gas that was making all sorts of sounds.
White noise machines help parents create that safe, noisy space. While you can run the vacuum for hours or throw the hairdryer on to help the baby fall asleep, it’s much more practical to use a sound machine.
Hatch Baby – This sound machine and night light is our absolute favourite nursery must-have. It’s a smart nightlight and sound machine that you can control with your smartphone. We love it because it grows with your child. From providing light for changing baby’s diaper in the night to being a simple nightlight for your toddler to helping your preschooler identify when it’s time to stay in bed or time to rise for the day.
This is an easy to use nursery sound machine and should be added to your registry if it isn’t already on there.
Lectro Fan – If you are looking for some basic white noise the LectroFan is perfect for you. Choose the pitch you want and use white noise or a fan-like noise to help your baby sleep. Enjoy volume control that ranges from soft and discreet to fairly loud if that’s what your little one enjoys.
Marpac Hushh – For your diaper bag, the Marpac Hushh is the perfect baby white noise machine. This little device is only 3.5″ and will help your baby fall asleep while you’re out of the home. Easily attach this sound machine to your stroller or car seat and enjoy 3 soothing sounds with volume control. This device can also be “locked” so little hands do not change the volume or sound while you’re not looking.
Charge this device with a USB cable and forget the batteries. This white noise machine is very portable and great to take with you out of the home.
It is very important to be able to keep your baby room dark in the daytime, and blackout curtains can help you do that. Babies need to learn when it is time to play and when it is time to sleep, and having the room dark when trying to put them to sleep is essential.
Baby will sleep a lot better in a darker room. Here are some great blackout curtains for your nursery:
- AmazonBasics Room Darkening Blackout Window Panel Curtains
- Total Black Out Panels
- Travel Blackout Curtains
Cloud b Twilight Constellation Night Light – This very cute nightlight is a stuffed animal that is operated by battery and is meant to be your little one’s sleep buddy. It projects a starry night sky onto the walls and ceiling of their room in the colour which your child loves best. The lights turn off after 45 minutes to ensure the room stays dark for the remainder of their sleep.
Babies have an automatic sucking reflex that helps them draw out breastmilk and suck on a bottle. This sucking reflex also helps them calm down and stay calm. It lowers their blood pressure, heart rate and stress levels too. A swaddled baby in a room with white noise and a soother can be much easier to settle down than a baby with their arms flailing about, in a quiet room with no soother.
Babies spent 9 months in the womb, and while they were in there they were rocked and swung on a daily basis while mom moved around. This is why they love to fall asleep while being held and rocked in your arms. A baby swing can and will be your absolute life saver. Swings are made for naps, not night time sleep, but they are very helpful to soothe baby while they are near you during the daytime so you can get some things done.
4Moms Mamaroo – This baby swing is our absolute favourite because it mimics parents’ movements as it sways side to side and up down. Most other swings do not have these kinds of motions. There are 5 different motions that the Mamaroo has and you can adjust the speed for each motion. Parents can also tilt the seat so it’s more newborn friendly, or more upright for an older baby. This swing can accommodate a baby up to 25 pounds.
You can also control the entire swing from your cell phone, which is super handy. The cover is removable with a simple zipper and you can throw it in your washing machine for easy cleaning. Another bonus? It’s pretty small and sleek which means it doesn’t take up a lot of space in your home and it looks pretty darn good too.
Babies are all very different, and different sleep strategies will need to be tested before you find a healthy sleeping situation that works for you.
Here are some of our favorite sleep books for newborns:
If your baby is going to sleep in a different room than you, a baby monitor is a must-have baby sleep product. Rest easy knowing your baby is breathing well and sleeping peacefully in their bedroom while you are not nearby with a good quality video monitor. We recommend a monitor with night vision like this one or one with 2-way communication and night vision like this one.
For parents who have extra worries about their baby while they snooze, the owlet sock monitor system is a good investment.
This is a light sock like cordless device that wraps the baby’s foot (like a sock) and it monitors heart rate and oxygen levels. All this information that the sock gathers from your baby’s vitals is stored on your smart phone, and you can even receive real time notifications in the event that something goes wrong. You can use this device with wifi or bluetooth so you can use it even if your internet is down.
While the downside of this smart sock is that is requires charging between naps, it does have an 18 hour battery life so it can be used for most of the day without worry.
There are 3 different sock sizes so you can use this system from newborn to 18 months. that means this is a worthy investment for your little one.
For When They Feel Unwell
Your baby may catch a cold during the newborn stages and it can be very difficult for parents who had just gotten into a good sleep routine to have it suddenly interrupted by the common cold.
To help your baby sleep better when they feel unwell, these are the best sleep products to help you get through the tough nights.
NoseFrida – The NoseFrida is a snot sucker or a “nasal aspirator” as the doctors call it. This is a better way to get snot that is lodged inside your baby’s nose, and it is more effective than a nose bulb. It’s a little bit on the gross side to talk and think about, but it is a life-changing product that you would be glad to have a 2am when dealing with a stuffy baby. Simply place the tube into your baby’s nose and use the straw to suck out any snot that you can. There are measures in place to help you not get any of the gross stuff inside your mouth, which is what makes this a must-have baby item.
Cool Mist Humidifier – To help your baby breathe better, a humidifier is a must-have nursery product. We love the crane humidifiers because they are very quiet, and they come in many different animal shapes to help match any nursery. They also offer a 24 hours run time and are very easy to clean!
Soft And Cozy Things
While you shouldn’t have anything in the baby’s crib until age 1, soft and cuddly lovies can be used for snuggles before falling asleep when the baby is old enough to hold onto and appreciate it.
These are the best soft and cuddly things that can help your little one sleep:
Lovey Security Blanket – This adorable blanket is a huge hit for babies and it makes a great gift for new expecting parents too. This is a very plush and comfortable stuffed animal blanket that babies can snuggle up with and take everywhere with them when they become toddlers too. We love that these blankets are BPA free and non-toxic too.
Aden by aden + anais Security Blanket – If you love muslin blankets, you’ll adore these Aden and Anais security blankets. The material is breathable so your little one can have this blanket against their face and be able to breathe. We still don’t recommend having it in the crib or bassinet with them until at least age 1 though.
Helpful Tips For Parents To Help Baby Sleep
While having the best baby sleep products will set you up for sleep success with your newborn, having some background knowledge on baby sleep will help.
These are some things you can do to help your baby sleep better.
- Swaddle – Swaddling helps soothe a struggling baby and helps keep the startle reflex in check.
- Feed Well – A baby who is full will sleep longer and better.
- White Noise – Babies experienced a lot of noise while in the womb, and being out of the womb can be quiet at times, the white noise will help soothe.
- Create Routines – Routines are great for everyone, but they can really help babies get to know what to expect at certain times during the day and night.
- Avoid Overstimulation – an overtired and overstimulated baby will have a harder time falling asleep than one who is well-rested.
- Allow Them To Resettle – Sometimes babies can settle themselves back down, so there is no need to rescue them with a cuddle every time they make a noise.
- Lay baby down awake but drowsy – When you’re putting your baby to sleep on their own in the crib, make sure they aren’t sleeping while you lay them down as they can awake and become startled that you are no longer holding them.
A Couple Of Infant Sleep Facts To Help You Understand Baby Sleep
- Sleep cycles are often 45-60 minutes long – Babies have short sleep cycles and they wake up often. Sometimes that means when they stir after 45 minutes of sleep, they may not actually be finished their whole nap, but they have finished a 45-minute sleep cycle. You can try to lull your baby back to sleep if they wake up quicker than expected.
- Babies go through REM sleep – About half of your baby’s sleep is light sleep where they can dream but can wake often. the other 50% of your baby’s sleep is deep, where not a whole lot can wake them up. To get to this type of sleep, it’s a good idea to use white noise and swaddling.
- It could take up to 20 minutes to fall into a deep sleep – Simply put, wait 20 minutes before starting another task after putting your baby to sleep to ensure they are fast asleep and will not be waking up in 5 minutes!
- The average infant naps from 1.5-2.5 hours – To help your baby sleep 1.5 hours, use our top sleep tips.
- Most newborns will not sleep through the night – Sorry new mom and dad, that’s just how it is. Babies need to eat continuously so they can grow up to be strong and big. That means having a couple of meals in the middle of the night.
An Ideal Newborn Sleep Routine
If you need some ideas on newborn sleep routines, here is one that works well for one of our baby gadget list moms:
- Wash the baby in the bath. We do not use soap daily, but we do like to wash off any milk that might have gotten caught n the adorable baby rolls.
- Put on a new diaper and use diaper cream if there is any redness or rash.
- Rub baby with lotion. This is a nice way to give your baby a soothing massage. If your baby has sensitive skin, we recommend using Cetaphil Baby Lotion .
- Put on clean pj’s. After washing up, it’s a good idea to put on a clean pair of pyjamas.
- Swaddle up. We like to use the swaddle me blankets for the newborn stage.
- Give a quick burp. Making sure there is no trapped air inside the baby before putting them down to sleep always helps them stay asleep.
- Turn on some white noise.
- Rock in the rocking chair to get them drowsy.
- Once drowsy, lay them down to sleep.
That is how a newborn can sleep 4-5 hour stretches throughout the night successfully.
Fore daytime naps, here is a sample routine you can follow for a longer daytime sleep:
- Make the room dark with blackout curtains.
- Turn on the white noise machine.
- Ensure the baby is fed and burped.
- Swaddle the baby.
- Rock the baby until they are drowsy but not asleep.
- Lay baby down for sleeping while they are awake but drowsy.
