Guide To Buying Baby Toys

Do Babies Really Need Toys?

Babies can play with their feet and tug on your nose for hours at a time, but there is a place for baby toys in your infants life.

Babies are constantly learning about the world around them, and everything is new and exciting. We can keep our babies safe by providing them with BPA free toys that engage their senses and let them safely explore and learn.

Babies do not actually need toys however since they do spend a lot of time sleeping and eating.

Around 3 months they do become more interested in toys, which is a great time for you to do simple activities with them to help with development.

So it is up to you, the parent whether you want to introduce your baby to toys and when you want to do so.

What Kind Of Toys Should Babies Be Playing With

Babies could be happy with a wooden spoon and takeaway container, so it’s not required for you to go out and spend a fortune on baby toys.

Great baby toys are full of features that help with the development of eyesight, fine motor skills and are safe too.

Things to consider when choosing toys for your baby:

Textures: You’ll notice a lot of toys have varying textures to them from velvet material to rubbery bumps. These textures help babies learn about motor skills and babies love all the interesting textures from 3 months and up.

Sounds: Baby toys are full of crinkles, rattles, and lullabies which helps your little get engaged with the toy. Babies are entertained when they hear jingles and squeaks as they shake and squeeze their toys.

Safety: Since babies do put everything and anything in their mouths, baby toys are created with safety in mind. There are no parts that can break and can cause choking in many baby toys, which is why they are a better alternative for play than household items.

Colors: It takes time for a baby to develop their vision from infancy until around 5 months of age. Toys with high contrasting colors help babies focus while brighter colors are enjoyed by babies older than 6 months or so.

Having a handful of bright and colorful toys can help distract the baby when they are fussy or simply make playtime more fun.

Baby’s Development Milestones During the First Six Months

The first 6 months are full of development and milestone hitting. Each baby will develop at different rates and your pediatrician can help you if you have concerns or questions about that.

According to the CDC here are some guidelines on milestones for the first 6 months.

Months 0-2
  • Holding up their head on their own
  • Smiling
  • Making eye contact and following objects with their eyes
  • Cooing and gurgling
  • Turning their head toward sounds

This is a great time to practice tummy time and holding soft toys in front of your baby to help reach those 0-2 month milestones.

Months 2-4
  • Social smiling
  • Copying facial expressions
  • Babbling
  • Reaching for toys with one hand
  • Rolling from tummy to back
  • Holding and shaking a toy

Your baby should be able to hold a toy by 4 months of age. Help your baby with the holding of the toys like rattles and encourage reaching and shaking to develop those motor skills.

Months 4-6
  • Looking at themself in a mirror
  • Responding to their name
  • Showing curiosity at toys and objects (and trying to eat them!)
  • Passing toys from one hand to another
  • Rolling in both directions
  • Beginning to sit without support

Hold a little mirror in front of baby and encourage smiling and laughing at this stage.

It is best to stick to simple toys that encourage open ended play when choosing toys for your little one.

Rattles, balls and play mats are awesome for encouraging these milestones.

Baby’s Development Milestones During Months 6-12

Months 6-12 are full of adventure for both parent and baby as they become more curios, start to become mobile and develop fears and opinions too.

The CDC has these following guidelines for months 6-12.

Months 6-9

  • Looks around at things nearby
  • Shows curiosity about things and tries to get things that are out of reach
  • Brings things to mouth
  • Begins to pass things from one hand to the other
  • Rolls over in both directions
  • Begins to sit without support

Help your baby learn these skills by naming objects and pointing to them and don’t be afraid to put toys out of reach so your baby can learn to reach, roll and crawl towards that toy.

Months 9-12

  • Looks for things he sees you hide
  • Moves objects from one hand to another
  • Pulls to stand
  • Sit without support
  • Pick up and eat cheerios

Help your baby hit those milestones by playing peek-a-boo, reading stories, and providing encouraging toys that help with sitting, standing and early walking.
