How Many Burp Cloths Do I Need As A New Parent

Baby life is a messy life, especially if you’re a new parent of a baby that has strong reflux! To reduce the laundry situation in your home, baby burp cloths will help a lot – as will baby bibs!

(This post contains affiliate links. Our full disclosure policy is really boring, but you can find it here.)

Baby burp cloths were our lifesaver with baby #3 who had pretty bad reflux issues for the first 6 months of life. We started off with 4 burp cloths before she was born, and quickly upgraded to 20, and we used them all every 4 days or so!

So how many burp cloths do you need? I would say 4 is a great started number, and if you find that you need more, then get some more at that point in time.

Babies spit up often. This is a fact that all parents know and having burp cloths for reflux and regular spit up, especially after nursing or drinking formula is going to help save your furniture, clothing, and skin from all the messy things a baby does.

You’ll want to have at least 1-2 washed and ready to use, especially if you are burping the baby after each feeding. It’s also super handy to have these in your diaper bag for all sorts of messy occurrences that happen while you’re out with the baby

Reflux, spit-up and burping and just common things your baby will do during feeding time and a burp cloth will prevent your clothing, and their clothing from getting soiled and unwearable.

Now that you know how many burp cloths you need to have for your baby, here are the best burp cloths that are high quality.

Putting the Right Number of Burp Cloths on Your Registry

For One Baby

You’ll want to register for about 4 burp cloths, or even 6 is great. On average it should be about 2 packs of burp cloths. If you are really worried about ruining your clothing, then maybe it’s better to register for 18 or so. It is much easier to wash 20 burp cloths than 20 t-shirts and 20 pairs of pants. Babies will get all of your clothes soiled, not just the tops!

I would try to add burp cloths that are multicolored as they are less likely to stain and then it will be easier for you to care for them. If your baby is a spitter, you might go through 8 cloths a day.

How Many Burp Cloths Should You Register For Twins

Double the mess, double the burp cloths! For twins, I would just go right ahead and add 40 burp cloths to the baby registry, or even try to find some second hand. You probably will not want to the same burp cloth for each baby, even if the baby didn’t spit up on it (that you know of). A lot of the time, baby burp cloths are so absorbent that a little bit of spit up can absorb so quickly you think the cloth is still clean. I always just threw mine right into the laundry, regardless of it being “clean”. Used is used.

Sorry to ramble, parenting is a tough job and if you’re having twins, most twins are premature and need extra help with feeding, then just go right ahead and register for 40 cloths.

Caring For Burp Cloths

Burp cloths are going to go through a lot, and they will eventually pick up stains from formula or breastmulk, and then when it’s time for baby food…well you’ll be dealing with many types of stains then.

To make sure the burp cloths stay colorful and clean, spray them with a stain fighter (my favourite is hydrogen peroxide) or you can use a special baby stain remover. You might need to rub the stain to get it out, but sometimes the stain remover just makes it disappear.

After your stain remover has been applied and has had some time to do the job, wash your burp cloths as normal. I usually just washed the burp cloths with the baby laundry. Dry on a low heat setting to ensure your burp cloths do not shrink.

After they are washed and clean, store them away on the changing table, or by the glider where you sit and feed your little one.

Choosing Your Burp Cloths

What Is Burp Cloth?

Burp cloths are smaller pieces of fabric that mommas and papas drape over their shoulders during a nursing or bottle feeding session. These cloths are easy to use and are very absorbent. While you burp the baby after feeding, a lot of babies will spit up, and the burp cloth will protect the parents clothing, and sometimes even the baby clothes from spit up. These burp cloths are thick, like a towel, but they are also soft and comfortable for the baby to rest on.

You can also use burp cloths to clean the baby’s mouth and wipe[e up any additional messes. You can continue using baby burp cloths around your home after your baby has outgrown them too as they do make wonderful rags to clean up all sorts of toddler messes.

Do I Even Need Burp Cloths?

Burp cloths are very important, I believe they are essential because you will need them to protect your clothing and wipe your baby after a spit-up incident.

According to research, 50% of infants spit up often.

The other 50% of infants spit up as well, just not as frequently, and you never know if your baby is going to be a daily spit-up producer or not.

Infants eat a lot of breastmilk or formula and they feed frequently and the pressure builds up in their bellies from all that intake of air and food, even if you purchase bottles that help prevent that air intake.

You can release this air and ease your baby’s discomfort by burping your baby, and this often will result in spit-up.

It’s not something to worry about unless your baby isn’t gaining weight, but if you are concerned, chat with your pediatrician about it. PS. here is my best guide on how to weigh your baby at home!

When Do I Start Using Burp Cloths?

You’ll want to have these ready to go before baby arrives. They are an excellent item to add to your registry.

Some babies may require a burp cloth from day one, and some babies won’t start spitting up until they are a week old or more.

Because it’s not something that you can really plan for, you can prepare for it by having your cloths ready to go before your head out to the hospital.

If your baby ends up being a non-spitter upper then you can use the burp cloths to clean your baby up after feeding, because milk will spill all over the place whether you’re bottle feeding or breastfeeding.

Babies also drool a whole heck of a lot, especially when starting the teething phase, and you’ll need burp cloths then as well.

Here are some newborn baby burping techniques that can help you with your newborn if you need it!

What Is The Best Material For Burp Cloths?

I really love the Muslin material for burp cloths because it is a soft material that gets softer after washing. Also, Muslin does not harm babies’ skin and the material absorbs liquids very well.

Organic bamboo and 100% cotton are also great choices as they are absorbent and do not shrink in the washing machine.

The Muslin cloth material is hypoallergenic which is great for babies, especially premature babies who have spent time in the NICU.

The Muslin cotton material is easy to fold and store and is lightweight and thinner than regular cotton, so it is naturally our best recommendation.

The Green Sprouts Muslin Burp Cloths and Aden + Anais Classic Burpy Bib are made from the Muslin cotton material.

What Is The Best Size For A Burp Cloth?

Your burp cloth should be big enough to cover your shoulder from front to back. You can’t predict the way spit up will flow and it’s very unpleasant to deal with spit up going down your back.

A nice length for a burp cloth is 20″ x 14″ as that seems to cover most shoulders for small and tall parents.

The best thing to keep in mind is to get the burp cloths that will cover your shoulders fully.

How Many Burp Cloths Do I Need?

I would say you should start with 4 and then you might want to upgrade to 18-20 if your baby is messy (like my third baby was!)

You’ll be going through a lot of these cloths, especially since one spit up can soil an entire cloth.

It may seem costly to stock up on burp cloths at the beginning of your parenting journey, but it is much cheaper to wash a burp cloth than to replace baby clothes.

You’ll want a few cloths to keep in your diaper bag at all times, and a few washed and ready to use on a daily basis.

You really cannot have too many burp cloths on hand, but you should aim to have at least 10-18.

Remember you’ll be rotating them daily in the washing machine, so even 10 may seem like you have none lying around if all the cloths are dirty. If you’re going to do laundry less frequently then you’ll want closer to 18 or so.

Can I Make My Own Burp Cloths?

You absolutely can make your own burp cloths! Make sure they are thick so that they absorb all the spit up.

Here is a tutorial for you:

Things To Keep In Mind

When you are looking for the best burp cloths to purchase for your new bundle of joy, here are some things to keep in mind.

Ease of use: You’re going to want a burp cloth that is easy to use. It shouldn’t be slippery because you won’t want it falling off your shoulder as you burp the baby. You’ll also want to avoid a very thick cloth that can cause itchiness and sweating.

Wash-ability: you’ll want a burp cloth that is easy to care for. Anything that requires extra care besides the standard wash and dry, won’t get done because you’ll be too busy with the baby to worry about treating your cloths special. You’ll want cloths that dry quickly and are durable enough to withstand washing over and over and over again.

Absorbency: You’ll want a burp cloth that is absorbent enough to soak up the spit-up. Cloths that come with multiple layers such as the Green Sprouts Muslin Burp Cloths, are a great choice for surefire absorbent burp cloths.

Price: You’ll want to keep the price in mind when selecting burp cloths, especially if you’re having a baby on a budget. The basic designs are less expensive whereas the fancy patterns drive up the price more. The use of the product does matter more than the design.

Which Burp Cloth Is The Best Burp Cloth

Hands down, my favourite and most recommended burp cloth is the Green Sprouts Muslin Burp Cloth for reflux and other messes.

There are a lot of burp cloths to choose from and jumping onto Amazon can leave you super overwhelmed as to which is the best option for you. Even in the shops, the cloths are packaged up so you can’t really feel them at all to determine softness and thickness. That really bothers me! Now you have the answer to your question “how many burp cloths do I need?” and you can go ahead and choose your favourite cloths, and add them to your amazon registry!

If you are on a budget, the Gerber Baby 4-Pack Flannel Burp Cloth is a great option. If budget is not a problem, or if you’re buying your friend a gift, then the Copper Pearl Baby Burp Cloths are a great option.

While there are so many options for burp cloths, the best thing to do is pick the one thats on budget, is easy to use and easy to care for.
