The Best Jogging Strollers

How to find the best jogging stroller for your active lifestyle that will provide comfort and stability for your and your baby.

(This post contains affiliate links. Our full disclosure policy is really boring, but you can find it here.)

Whether you are looking for a stroller to take a jog with, or you simply want a durable stroller that will help you get around quickly on all of your outdoor adventures, you’re in the right place to find the best one that suits your needs.

Maybe you’re not quite sure if you need a jogging stroller at all.

The big three-wheel stroller is undoubtedly appealing, but you may have questions regarding car seat adaptability, what age you can use the stroller with, and if a jogging stroller is different than any other stroller other than the number and size of wheels.

We will show you some cold hard facts about the stroller, share my opinion, and then let you make up your mind as to which jogging stroller is best for your family.

Important Things To Consider When Purchasing A Jogging Stroller

Balance: When you are choosing a jogging stroller for your family, you’re choosing a stroller that will likely need to handle rougher terrain. A stroller that can maintain stability and balance on an uneven surface is very important. You’re going to need to find a stroller that can evenly distribute weight evenly on the roughest terrain. The fixed wheel position should not have any wobbling motions which will help the stroller roll in a straight line and not go off the pathway.

Wheels: A city stroller with small wheels is not stable enough and the stroller will not have the suspension you require for running and jogging. You need a stroller that can handle bumpy roads, cracked sidewalks and high speeds. Models with larger wheels will roll more smoothly and at a faster speed than those with smaller wheels.

Fold: Chances are, if you are using a jogging stroller on rougher terrain, you may be travelling with the stroller in the car. You’ll need the stroller to fold up compact so that it can fit in the trunk of the car without issue. The stroller you choose should be easy to fold. We love the Graco Fast Action Fold Jogger Travel System because it features a one-hand fold that comes in handy when you’re out and about with a baby.

Weight: All strollers have different weight limits and you should know your stroller limits before you start using them. If too much weight is used on a stroller, the suspension will not work as well, or give out altogether. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the weight restrictions on your new jogging stroller.

Adjustable Handlebar: Ad adjustable handlebar is an important feature in a jogging stroller because you want a unit that your entire family can use. It is more likely that two parents in one household are different heights, so an adjustable handle can help both parents use one stroller comfortably. Your shoulders and arms will thank you if you purchase a stroller that can adjust to your height needs.

Hand Brake: If you are running on hills, then a hand brake can be a handy helper on your jogging stroller. It allows you to control your pace and maintain form when running down a hill rather than leaning back and trying to keep your stroller from getting away from you. It is a safety feature you should consider if you are going to run on hills.

Wrist Strap: A high end jogging stroller should have a wrist strap. The wrist strap should always be attached to your wrist whole you run as it helps you control your stroller when you are going down hill.

Front Wheel Lock: Jogging strollers have a front-wheel swivel that can be locked straight. The lock needs to be engaged when you are running to avoid instability and crashing your stroller. When you are using slower speeds such as walking, it is ok to leave the front wheel unlocked. A stroller that does not have a locking front wheel feature is not going to be a good fit as a jogging stroller. For easier turning, while you are running with a locked front wheel is to push down on the handlebar to slightly take the weight off the wheel and then gently swivel the stroller for your turn. With a little practice, you can do this with one hand.

Suspension: A jogging stroller should have proper suspension and shock absorbing systems in place to ensure a smooth and uncomfortable ride for your baby. Cheaper models do not have this feature and can be more bumpy and harsh for the child who is in the seat during a jog.

Seat: Most jogging strollers have seats that are more inclined even in the most upright position available for safety reasons. Seats are also equipped with 3-5 point harnesses to keep the child safe and secure in the seat.

Additional Features: Some features that we love in a jogging stroller are basket size for the diaper bag, storage for water bottle as well as keys and phone. Any stroller that does not have a space for parent items should be able to accommodate a stroller organizer. The Bob Revolution Flex 3.0 Jogging Stroller has great options for parents who love good storage options on their jogging stroller.

Quality: When you’re spending your hard-earned money on a jogging stroller, you’re going to want to find one that is high quality and durable too. A steel or aluminum frame is a much better option than plastic. The wheels and tires should be high quality as well and the best options are rubber air-filled tires. Plastic parts on a stroller tend to break easier.

The fabric on the stroller frame is very important since this is where your baby will spend all of its time. It’s a good idea to find a stroller where you can remove the seating to give it a wash or at least be able to wipe it down well with a wet cloth.

Check for recalls: Check the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website for recalls, especially if you are purchasing a stroller second hand.

Multi-Sport Trailer For Jogging

Thule Chariot Cheetah XT Multisport Trailer

Multisport trailers are multi-functional trailers that look like little strollers that you can use for multiple recreation sports, including jogging.

There are 2 Thule multi sport trailers that are best for running.

The Thule Chariot Cross and The Thule Chariot Lite.

They are quite a bit more expensive due to their multi functionalities.

The Thule Chariot Cheetah XT is the more affordable model and still has a lot of great features.

This chariot can connect with a bike, ski, stroll and jog with you. There are special attachments for every activity, which does add up in price for these chariots.

Each chariot comes with a strolling and bicycle kit included with it, the skiing kit and jogging kits are purchased separately.

If you attach the jogging kit which has a large front wheel, this stroller does become a competitor in the best jogging strollers list.

The wheels have pumped up tires and the trailer component has a proper suspension. The trailer can handle rough terrain and doesn’t get stuck on cracked sidewalks.

The front wheel cannot be unlocked when the jogging kit is in use which means you can only use this stroller for high speeds and bumpy terrain. It won’t be terribly comfortable to use it on a slow stroll.

This stroller is easy to push with one hand but can be more difficult to steer in crowded places. It is not suitable for narrow spaces either.

The wheels are similar to bike tires, and the baby in the carriage will have a bumpy and bouncy ride.

If you want to use this stroller for daily use, simply switch to two front wheels to create a more maneuverable stroller.

This stroller comes in a single and double version, so it depends on how many kids you need to accommodate which version you choose.

The Chariot XT can handle up to 75lb but the Chariot XT2 can handle up to 100 lb, which means the XT2 can serve you longer.

The stroller itself weighs 19.4 lb in the single version and the double version weighs 26.5 lb. The double is 5 inches wider at 31.5″ and isn’t great for narrow doorways.

The chariot seats have 5 point harnesses to keep your kids safe while you take them on a jog or a bike ride.

This trailer is not made for infants, but better suited for 2-7 years old.

The chariot has 2 flaps which can keep harsh weather out when they are down. You can also cover the top of the trailer with canopy that has a sun visor to keep out the sun from the kids eyes.

The backrest is mesh which allows air to circulate through which is great for warmer days.

The carriage is also made with reflective material which makes it easy to see the chariot in lower light.

Did we mention the adjustable handlebar? Yes, the Chariot has one, so you can rest easy knowing your neck and wrist won’t be so sore after your run.

There is no storage basket on this stroller which is a huge drawback, and the seats inside the chariot do not recline.

This stroller is the best quality-price ratio and is one of the lightest multi-sport trailers (both the single and double version).  It’s one piece of baby gear that is suitable for different outdoor activities: jogging, strolling, riding a bike and skiing (fewer things to store). Perfect for active parents.

Do You Really Need a Jogging Stroller

A traditional stroller will be your best friend if you’re looking to stroll around the mall or on smooth sidewalks in your neighbourhood.

If you are planning to take your stroller out for a bumpy ride, such as a dirt road or an uneven path, the jogging stroller is a must-have.

Jogging Stroller Tips

If you are new to the jogging stroller, here are some tips to make jogging a happier experience for you and your kids.

  1. Plan your jogs around naps and meals: Your baby won’t be too happy if they are hungry while you are out for your jog. A fussy baby won’t be a whole lot of fun for you and you might have to stop off for a feeding session before you keep going on your jog. Keep nap times in mind as well, and if your baby won’t sleep in the stroller then ensure they get a good rest at home before heading out for your run.
  2. Avoid Headphones: since you are not going to be alone, you’ll want to be fully aware of your surroundings and your baby too. Headphones can be a huge distraction and you won’t be able to hear voices and noise around you. Music is not a bad idea, but it’s better to play them from the parent try on your phone speaker, but keep the volume low so you can pay attention to the noise around you.
  3. Do not push yourself too hard: Jogging strollers are heavy so it is better to keep your walks and jogs shorter when you are first starting out to avoid extreme exhaustion.
  4. Avoid Blankets: Blankets can get loose even if you tucked them well. This can jam up in the stroller wheels while you jog and cause an accident. Also, babies can suffocate with loose blankets when they are not being watched, and since you are jogging, you could miss the dangers. Babies should be properly dressed when in the stroller without a need for a blanket.
  5. Jog in quiet neighbourhoods: Quiet roads can be easier to jog on when you first start out so you can jog on the side of the road if the sidewalk is bumpy. Walking paths at city parks are good places to get started when using a jogging stroller.
