Awesome Diaper Pales That ARe Great Diaper Genie Alternatives
The Diaper Genie by Playtex is the number one best-selling diaper pails due to it’s “Odour Lock System” that features a built-in, odour controlling double airtight clamp system to help seal the doors.
On top of that, there is a carbon filter at the very top of the pail to eliminate any other odors to try to escape the diaper pail.
Stink control is a big problem when it comes to diaper pails which is why the Diaper Genie is so popular.
Another handy feature of the Diaper genie is the foot pedal which prevents the need to bend down and open the pail to throw in your dirty diaper.
While the Diaper Genie is really an all in one system for managing dirty diapers, some parents may be on the hunt for something with different functions, perhaps something that doesn’t require extra special disposal bags and odour control refills.
Luckily, there are many options available for new parents to choose from and we have put together a comprehensive list of the best alternatives to the diaper genie from affordability to alternate features you might be looking for in a diaper bin.
Best Diaper Pails and Bins
The Dekor Plus Hands Free Diaper Pail is as close to the Diaper Genie as you can get, and it is certainly an acceptable alternative.
This pail comes in 3 sizes, the Mini, Classic and Plus which can hold 25, 45, and 60 dirty diapers, depending on the diaper sizes you are using.
If your nursery is on the smaller size, the mini may be a better option for you as it takes up less room.
Once your baby is finished with diapers, you can convert the Dekor Plus Hands Free Diaper Pail into a regular trash can by removing the diaper trap door.
This diaper pail also comes in pink, grey, white and blue to perfectly match your nursery.
The smell isn’t an issue with this pail system as the Dekor pail features an odor control system to keep odors at bay.
|3 Different Sizes||Requires Special Bags|
|Variety Of Colors|
|Foot Pedal For Hands-Free Use|
The Odorless Cloth Diaper Pail is designed for cloth diapers, but you can use it for disposable diapers too.
This is a great pail which is simple to use and care for.
This is a plastic bucket, with a plastic lid, but it also has a charcoal filter on the lid for odor control.
The locking lid is very helpful if you have pets or other children who like to get up to mischief.
You can use a large trash bag with this pail and hold a lot of dirty diapers in it.
The plastic is actually recycled, and is built to lock in odours. This is a good option for cloth diapers, disposible diapers and wet diapers too.
Because of the capacity of this pail, you can easily toss diapers for days for twins before needing to change the trash bag out.
Yes, it is a large plastic bucket with a lid, so it seems pricey for the design.
|Made with recycled plastic||Is a large plastic trash can|
|Has charcoal disk for odour control|
|Can use any regular trash bag|
|Can be used for cloth diapers and disposables|
|Great for twins|
The Ubbi Odor Locking Diaper Pail is a nice alternative to the Diaper Genie as it does have odor locking technology and an easy slide open top to drop in dirty diapers.
There is no foot pedal to this pail which does make it less desirable to some parents but it is easy to slide open at the top of the pail and does have a child safety lock so children do not put their toys in the pail.
You can use any diaper pail bag refills with this pail but it is recommended that you use the Ubbi Disposable Bags.
|Child Lock Lid||No Foot Pedal|
|Variety Of Colors|
|Can Use Any Diaper Pail Refill Bags|
We like the Prince Lionheart Twist’r Diaper Disposal System because it is effective for removing smell from your nursery. It does involve some work though to ensure it works properly, which is the biggest downfall.
That being said, it is a great system overall and it does do the job of keeping smelly diapers from overpowering the room with stench.
The technology in this diaper pail allows you to toss diapers into a trap door, hands free and then seals that diaper individually into a plastic baggie.
Activated charcoal packs absorb odors too for extra smell protection.
The not so great thing about this specific diaper pail is that special bags are required to work with this system. They have strings on them that help with the twisting and locking in the diaper.
The system works like this:
- The diaper gets thrown into the trap door
- Then you step onto the pedal which twists the bag inside the bin
This diaper pail holds up to 45 newborn diapers. The bigger the diaper, the less the bin holds, as with any other diaper pail.
While this whole system is a little more on the expensive side, it does do the job of eliminating odours. The trash bag price is also high, so you’ll need to keep that in mind when you are making your monthly Amazon prime order. Let’s face it, special technologies are more expensive than regular trash bags.
|Completely gets rid of the stink||The bag can fill up quickly|
|7-Layer Bag that traps odour molecules||Expensive system|
|Patented Twist Technology that seals in odours||Replacement bags pricey|
|Activated Charcoal that absorbs odors||As the diaper pail becomes full you can not push new diapers down|
|No bending required.|
|The bag is relatively easy to change out|
The Munchkin Step Diaper Pail is a gold standard diaper pail that has odour control and a sleek design with an easy to use foot pedal.
This is a really great diaper pail for parents. It is affordable and it keeps the smell away. You can purchase scented liners as well – we love the lavender.
There is a baking soda wheel which helps keep the smell away and the whole system is very easy to use.
Refill bags simply snap close when it’s time to change the bag out so the smell stays within the liner as you transport it to the outside bin.
This system can hold up to 30 diapers, depending on diaper size, which is a little bit more than other diaper pail systems can hold.
The design of this system is easy to use and easy to clean as well. It works well with most nursery themes and has a sleek look to it.
The one thing we don’t love about this diaper is the fact that you have to use a little force to push the diaper into the pail. If the diaper is rather full, it can be a yucky experience. We do wish the opening was larger, but also that would mean the smell is more likely to come through. You win some, you lose some.
Because you have to purchase special liners for this bin, you must add that to your monthly baby budget. Every few months you will also want to change out the baking soda disk.
We do recommend changing the liners often, especially if the diapers are particularly stinky once the baby starts eating solid foods. The nursery will begin to smell if the liners are not changed out often enough.
|Awarded 2020 Best Overall Diaper Pail by the Good Housekeeping Institute||Needs special liners|
|Patented self-sealing system|
|For every Step Diaper Pail sold, Munchkin will plant a tree|
|Measures 27” high x 12” deep|
|Comes with step pedal to open hands-free|
|Childproof locking system|
|Durable plastic pail|
We also like the Creative Baby Tidy Diaper Pail. It does lock in odours well, which is why it is in the top list of best diaper pails. It is a good alternative to the diaper genie.
Featuring a one hand use design which is unique from other diaper pails. It also holds a few more diapers than other models.
We really enjoy the fact that you do not have to purchase special liners for this bin, you can use any trash bag you have on hand.
This means you save money and don’t have to add special bags to your budget every month.
You can fit approximately 30 diapers in this bin before you have to change the bag out, depending on the size of the diapers.
This is how the system works:
- Slide the handle downwards and open the lid.
- Slide the dirty diaper into the hole
- Slide the lid closed again.
There is no twisting or squishing involved. There is a foot spot on the bottom of the pail to ensure the pail doesn’t slip and slide around when you are pulling the lid down.
To change the liner you just take off the top, pull the bag out, and place a new bag in.
The plastic on this diaper pail is cheaper than other pails. The mechanism does tend to get stuck often, which can lead to a stinky bedroom if not dealt with right away.
There is no baking soda, or activated charcoal to help with the smell, so you must ensure the bin is constantly properly sealed in order to have a smell-free room.
|Compatible with any disposable bag||Cheap plastic|
|Designed for one-hand easy use||Mechanism sometimes sticks|
|Dishwasher safe||No secondary smell control such as baking soda or charcoal|
|Rotating lid design|
The The Diaper One N Done is a unique diaper system which attaches to your change table for easy diaper disposal.
No need to reach down and hold onto your baby as you throw away your diaper. The bin can stand on it’s own, or hang onto your changing table.
The benefit of this pail is you can use any trash bag inside this pail, and then when it’s full, wrap it up and place it into your family garbage bin.
The smell doesn’t really get out of the trash bag because you are placing it into a ag and tying it up pretty quickly. This is why this pail is a good option for your nursery.
It’s a good system because you’re only ever dealing with one smelly mess at a time, rather than a large amount of dirty diapers like traditional diaper pails.
One other thing we don’t really love about this pail is the price. For a small pail like this, it seems a little expensive to us. As baby grows and the diapers get larger, it will not be an effective system in the long run.
This is not a good system for cloth diapers as there is no lid.
|Small design||Only holds one-two diapers at a time|
|Can hang off the change table||Pricey for a small pail|
|holds one-two diapers at a time – no time to make room smelly|
The Vliba Diaper system is a stylish and effective diaper pail with an innovative design that comes in 6 colours.
This pail can fit up to 45 newborn diapers and the initial purchase comes with a 6 month supply of liners.
It features a hands free foot pedal operation which is helpful for parents with their hands full.
This pail has a trap door to toss diapers into and the lid closes when you take your weight off the foot pedal.
This is a very stylish diaper pail, which is why it is more pricey than others. There are 6 colors to choose from to match any nursery. This pail requires no expensive refill rings or tubes that require cutting with sharp blades and tying.
All Vliba diaper pails come with a sample pack of 25 individual diaper disposal sacks great for quick changes in the car or at grandma’s house.
The Vliba Diaper Pail is 20 inches in height coming up to about the level of your knee.
The discreet, modern design of Vliba doesn’t scream “diaper pail” making it a great option for adult use too.
|Stylish and effective||Pulling the bag out has been proven difficult for some|
|6 colour options|
|Capacity of 45 newborn diapers|
|Includes a sample pack of Vliba’s extra-thick individual diaper disposal sacks|
|Hands free, foot pedal operation|
Diaper Systems That Don’t Eliminate Odours As Well
The original diaper genie was amazing, but the Playtex Diaper Genie Complete isn’t as great, unfortunately.
While the origi0onal diaper genie did lock in odours well, many customers complain that the new model does not.
This tall pail requires no bending with a foot pedal for easy, hygienic and hands-free opening which is nice.
The Complete Pail features Double Air-Tite Clamps that works with the 7-layer diaper pail refill bags and carbon filter to add a layer of double dooty odor protection, which unfortunately doesn’t work as well as it is designed to.
Over 1.5 million moms put their trust in Diaper Genie Complete for a fresher smelling nursery.
|Built-In Odor Controlling Antimicrobial||Requires diaper genie refill bags|
|Carbon filter||Does not lock in odours well|
|Clean laundry scent|
There is no denying that Tommee Tippee is a trusted baby brand. We did expect a little more from the Tommee Tippee Simplee diaper pail.
The pail features an odour locking antibacterial agent that kills germs.
This pail has a smart lid which you flip open, pop the diaper in and it flip it back down.
The biggest issue with this diaper pail is the location of the trap door. You have to place your entire hand into the diaper pail while holding the baby on the changing table to prevent her from rolling off. Kind of a tricky design!
This easy to use and compact diaper pail can hold up to 18 diapers, which is not as bad as it sounds because you take the diapers out to the outside bin more often, meaning less chance of getting a stinky nursery.
|Kills germs||holds 18 diapers|
|Small and compact||Doesn’t lock in odours well|
|Have to stick entire arm inside diaper pail to place diaper in|
At a comfortable price point, the Safety 1st Easy Saver Diaper Pail is a parent favourite, but it doesn’t lock in odours quite as well as other diaper pails.
One nice feature is that you can use any plastic bag inside this pail which means you don’t have to spend extra cash on special refills.
This pail does not feature a step pedal which kind of sucks. The access to the bin is at the top of the lid where you press the button and the top pops open to throw in your dirty diapers.
There is a deodorizer disk to help keep odours at bay, and you can purchase refills of these if you need them.
The problem with this diaper pail is that while they certainly tried to make a pail that traps smell, they failed to ensure that the smell actually stays in the pail. You can smell the diapers from a whole different room!
Overall this is a simple and affordable diaper system, just know that you’ll have to be extra diligent in changing out the bags to try to control the smell.
|Can hold up to 50 diapers||Doesn’t fit larger diapers in|
|Can use any regular bag||No foot pedal|
|Has deodorizer disk||Does not lock in odours well|
|Taller Base and ergonomic lid|
We wish we could love the Bubula Steel Diaper Pail. It is the only other steel pail like the Ubbi, but it doesn’t work as well and fails to meet the needs of many consumers.
The pail is made with steel all over except for the hinges. This is where people report the lid breaks off from often.
Unfortunately many report that this pail doesn’t lock in odours. A diaper pail’s main job is to make sure the nursery stays stink free, and this one fails at the job.
Unfortunately, a lot of customers also reported that the product needs to be replaced after a few months of use. Any diaper pail worth investing in should last a couple of years, which makes this a very disappointing product overall.
It does have some good things, such as the easy to operate design, and it comes in many different colors to match any nursery as well.
Even though the product tends to fail often, the customer service for this pail is great. You will get your pail replaced if it malfunctions without question. It’s not a terrible choice for a diaper pail, but there are some better options out there for steel diaper pails, such as the Ubbi.
|Steel and aluminum construction with air-tight lid to prevents odors||Many customers reported the lid snapping and breaking|
|Taller base and ergonomic lid design||Doesn’t hold in smells well|
|Includes safety lock||Expensive|
|Unique design easily converts to a regular trash can for long-term use in any room|
|Uses standard-size can liners|
Guide To Buying A Diaper Pail
Do you need a diaper pail for your home? Yes and no. If you are ok with throwing dirty diapers into your regular trash can after each change, and keeping up with the trash being taken to the outside garbage on a regular basis, then sure, you may not need a diaper pail.
However, if you are busy, and need somewhere quick to throw a dirty diaper where the dog won’t eat it and the room won’t start to smell, then a diaper pail is a good idea.
Diaper Pail Must-Have Features
Control smell: Diapers get stinky. Not so much in the newborn stages, but when the baby starts eating solid foods around 4-6 months of age, the diapers get downright yucky. Babies use up to 12 diapers a day, and that adds up super quick and gets really smelly in a small room like a nursery. A diaper pail can help eliminate odours by locking up the dirty diapers and masking the smells. Some diaper pails use baking soda, activated charcoal or scented garbage bags as a secondary measure for masking the smells. It gets pretty bad sometimes, and a diaper pail can help you from having to ensure foul smells. Some diapers twist individual bags so the diapers are trapped inside their very own little baggie, making it darn near impossible to smell that sucker.
Easy to empty and reload: You’ll be changing the diaper pail liners out every two days or so. A good diaper pail will be easy to load and reload. Some diaper pails require you to tie a bag inside of the pail shell, which can be a bit of a pain in the butt when you’re busy with a new baby.
Easy disposal: A diaper pail should be easy to remove the diaper bag from and the bag should contain the smell of the diapers while you walk through the house to the outside bin. Diapers should not fall out and the bag should not rip. Some liners are very thin and can rip if there are too many diapers in them and others can rip due to the design of the diaper pail. Diaper pail should be easy to use and should have high-quality bags.
Price Point: With so many other nursery requirements, a diaper pail shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg. For a higher quality pail, you will pay more money, and you may even have to spend monthly on liners as well. These are all things to consider when looking for a diaper pail.
Size and style: This is an item that is going into your nursery so you don’t want to purchase something that is going to be an eyesore. You’ll likely want a pail that can hold more than 14 diapers at a time so you don’t have to change it every second day.
Tips for Choosing The Best Diaper Pail
There are a few must haves when it comes to a diaper pail and most diaper pails do have these features built in, but the alternatives may not so you’re going to want to look for these features in your home made diaper pail.
- Must have a lid
- Step pedal is a bonus
- The material of bin can be disinfected
- Do not purchase a diaper pail you plan on using for regular garbage as well as diapers
- Stainless steel is a great option that doesn’t lock in odours like plastic
Frequently Asked Questions About Diaper Pails
How To Prevent Diaper Pails From Stinking
Sometimes the stench of the diaper pail is enough to make anyone feel nauseous, and that smell will stick to your baby too, so it’s a great idea to have some odor repelling tactics in your knowledge base to prevent some of these stinks from happening.
Some natural ways you can eliminate diaper pail odors:
- Add a coffee filter at the bottom of the diaper pail to absorb the stink
- No coffee filter? Try a dryer sheet instead
- Spray white vinegar into the pail every time you empty it. Vinegar is a natural odor eliminator.
- Sprinkle some baking soda at the bottom of the diaper pail. You can refresh the baking soda each time you take out the bag.
- Add cloves to the bottom of the bin, the strong smell of clove will cover up any diaper stink you may smell.
- Old coffee grounds are also excellent odor absorbents, dump some in a plastic container, and place at the bottom of the pail.
- You can use a scooped out lemon half filled with salt and place it at the bottom of the pail and replace it every week before it gets moldy.
- Wash out the diaper pail after removing the bag of dirty diapers.
Remember that dirty diaper pails are a health hazard and should never get to the point where the stench is unbearable.
Mold can grow on diapers from moisture in the air combined with the feces in the diaper, which is not healthy to have floating around your nursery.
Keep your nursery safe by changing your diaper bags often and before they get really smelly.
Diaper Disposal Safety
Your new baby is going to go through a lot of diapers, so it is a good idea to know how to dispose of them properly.
Disposable diapers have the potential to be a health hazard to the public and there is something to consider when throwing them away whether you are at home or out in public.
Cloth diapering has certainly become rather popular once again, but disposable diapers are still an option that many families use.
Disposable diapers are so easy to use, we certainly see the appeal of them at baby gadget list, but throwing away plastic wrapped feces into the trash can pose some health risks.
It is recommended that all feces should be dumped into the toilet, even if you are using disposable diapers.
These are just a few of the bacteria that can be found in feces.
- Gastrointestinal viruses.
- E. coli.
These are all very dangerous, and proper diaper disposal is very much necessary.
How To Dispose Of Diapers Properly
- Throw all feces into the toilet before disposing of diapers.
- Wrap the diaper up in within itself (so it’s a ball) and secure with the straps
- Place diaper into diaper pail or plastic bag and seal it up
- Dispose of the diaper in an outdoor garbage bin
- Wash your hands
The Best Diaper Bins For The Nursery
While the Diaper Genie certainly is very popular, it is not the only odour controlling pail you can purchase for your beautiful nursery. Having options for diaper pails that do not require special maintenance such as extra bags or odour elimination products can help new parents save money on their baby essentials.
Our favourite diaper bin is the Dekor Plus Hands-Free Diaper Pail specifically because it is well designed, has an excellent and affordable price point and parents love how easy it is to use. It also helps keep the nursery from smelling, especially if you take proper precautions and empty the pail on a regular basis.
